Lawyer Explains Why You Should Never Use The Self-Checkout Lines

should be aware of, beyond the annoyance they cause. These machines were primarily introduced to save on labor costs, not to enhance customer experience. According to Sylvain Charlebois from Dalhousie University, customers disliked them from the start.

Retailers can save up to 66% by replacing cashiers with self-checkout machines, driving their popularity. However, these machines often malfunction, with 67% of shoppers reporting issues. Additionally, some stores are falsely accusing customers of theft to profit further.

Criminal defense attorney Carrie Jernigan warns against self-checkout machines due to increased theft risks. Retail giants like Walmart show little leniency towards customers who accidentally miss scanning items. They pursue legal action aggressively to support self-checkout profitability.

Jernigan advises against using self-checkout, as stores can easily accuse you of theft without substantial evidence. It’s a risky choice, potentially leading to legal trouble and a year in jail.

  1. The customers should get the 66% profit they make for having to scan their own grocery’s. If they go to all self check out, I’ll drop that store like a bad habit.

  2. I worked retail for 42 years I enjoyed working with the public.Made many friends ,and would not trade that experience for an thing.i work start ing at ate Ben Franklin in Buchanan,Va .Moved toRoanoke ,went to Woolco till they closed From 1973 -1983. From there went to Woolworth ‘s,This was back when you had to price everything, and ordered br little tickets or hand written tickets. AND the Customers where always right you bent over backwards to satisfy that customer.you really worked for that paycheck customer s would search me out then when they closed,l went to work for Walmart worked there till I Retired in 2 010, and I trained a lot of people on their particular jobs , ended up being a customer service manager.the last ten years and I still don’t like self checkout!!!!!

  3. That’s ridiculous, I know there are cameras but if you miss an item and forget scan as I have once or twice. When I realized I had a unscanned item go back inside and give the item to the clerk at the door. She let me scan the item I forgot. Simple.
    Stop the madness.
